Making the most of a small walled garden
This mews cottage in Glasgow's west end had a neglected, underused rear garden.
The clients, a couple with two young children, wanted to turn the area into an attractive, green space that they could use as an outside room with opportunity for the kids to play and interact with the garden. The garden's northerly aspect and relatively small surface area (9m x 6m) created challenges.
The solution incorporated two terraces linked by slab and gravel paths creating a variety of 'routes' round the garden. This provided new spaces for outdoor living while retaining room for the children to move around freely.
Two new raised planting beds were built and perimeter beds formalised with sleeper edges. Extensive new planting, chosen to thrive in the shady conditions, was installed to complement the few existing mature shrubs and trees. After a season of growth, the result will be a lush, inviting outside space that adds dramatically to the family home.
