New low-maintenance garden with year round interest
The owner of this modern semi-detached home in Stepps wanted both her front and back garden remodelled. The front garden was largely taken up with a small lawn and a monoblock driveway that sloped from street level down to the house. The driveway had to remain, but the client - a keen amateur artist, wanted the lawn removed and new low maintenance planting introduced. The planting had to be aesthetically pleasing, provide all-year round colour and scent, and be in keeping with the local area.
The solution was to replace the lawn with a gravel garden incorporating railway sleepers to help retain the gravel on the slope. A number of larger stones were used to provide further variation in texture. The main area of planting was curved around the edge of the driveway and pavement with smaller groups in the center of the garden and adjacent to the house. A wide variety of shrubs and perennials were used to provide the all-year interest required and included viburnum, choisya, dicentra, heuchera, lavender and hebe.
Finally, the client wanted to use a wooden bench she had aqcquired specially for the garden so a small paved area was introduced immediately in front of the house to accomodate this.
